DESCRIPTION

Live Free or Die looks at one of America’s most remote subcultures, following six individuals living in the back woods and swamps of America without any of the trappings of modern society. Freed from the constraints of a technology-fueled existence, they are modern-day pioneers who rely only on their skill and intuition to harness the natural environment.  The woods furnish their rugged lifestyle, but poses significant challenges that require quick and innovative solutions.  It’s a constant struggle to thrive using only their primitive methods.  They are faced with natural obstacles like brutal weather and depleted food sources and must find ways to survive that don’t violate the strict code they abide by to remain totally self-sufficient. But it is this very code, the difficulty of keeping it, and the potential to triumph over nature that fuel their desire to remain on these modern-day frontiers.

EPISODE GUIDE

  • Live Free or Die: Rise of The Wild
Episode 101 of The Primitives dives straight into the world of wild living as six individuals tough out winter in America's backwoods and swamps. Everyone is in search of food, but the winter weather is making the hunt difficult for some. In the Blue Ridge Mountains, primitive woodsman Thorn struggles to find even a trace of wildlife to turn into a meal. Meanwhile, close by, homesteaders Tony and Amelia battle the cold in their small cabin, making use of any meat they can get their hands on. Down in a river-swamp in southern Georgia, modern frontiersman Colbert shows his expertise when he catches something big near his river-swamp home. And across the country, in drought-stricken central California, primitive hunter Gabriel sets his sights on small game. Disappointed with the results at first, his luck soon changes.
  • Live Free or Die: Trial By Fire
In this episode, life in the wild continues as the primitives face unexpected personal challenges while trying to stay equipped with the essentials to survive as winter comes to a close. In the swamps of Georgia, frontiersman Colbert's hunting season is winding down, but not before he catches a raccoon in the woods near his house. The season is going to end well, it seems, but when he returns home with his catch, Colbert is faced with a tragedy with unimaginable consequences. In Appalachia, Tony and Amelia decide to build a water filter to process their drinking water. Nearby, Thorn finds himself with an eye infection and a fever after being exposed to the elements. After trying a few natural medicinal remedies, his condition improves in time for his daughter Briar's visit to the woods. Over in the mountains of California, Gabriel prepares for a boar hunt with the help of his friend Justin by forging a spear. Under cover of night, they embark on their hunt and soon encounter a large predator.

  • Live Free or Die: Blood, Sweat, & Tears
In this episode, familiar challenges and new ventures test the primitives survival skills. The winter, one of the most brutal on record for some, finally seems to be coming to an end. But, the hunt for food hasnt gotten any easier. In central California, the search for wild boar continues. Gabriel and his childhood friend Justin continue to track these giant animals and have a few close encounters. But, to their chagrin, the boars always manage to escape. In dire need of meat, they finally decide to shift their target to less challenging prey. In the Blue Ridge, Tony and Amelia continue to expand their homestead by clearing space for a coop for their newly acquired chicks. Nearby, Thorns camp is overcome by rainfall and he decides to start construction on a new shelter for himself and his young daughter, Briar. In southern Georgia, Colbert is reeling from a tragic discovery; his home of more than twenty years has burned to the ground. He sifts through the rubble and saves what little he can before posting up his small, exposed fishing hut.
  • Live Free or Die: Do Or Die
The changing seasons bring about new possibilities for the primitives as they continue to expand their horizons in the wild. The winter has finally lifted in Appalachia, but the rainy weather that marks the arrival of spring is proving a nuisance for Tony and Amelia. After repairing part of their water system damaged by a storm, they are delighted to find that most of their garden survived the unusually brutal winter. Thorn is taking advantage of the warmer weather by making an addition to his camp: a goat, which will provide him with protein from its milk. Further south in Georgia, Colbert tries to make up for the pelts he lost in the fire by setting new traps. Expecting to catch a beaver, he is surprised to find a turtle in his trap, but makes do. In California, Gabriels elder Tautaucho helps him hone his hunting technique. The lesson comes in handy one night when Gabe wakes up and shoots a raccoon out of a tree.
  • Live Free or Die: Butchers And Builders
The changing seasons force a change in perspective as these rugged men and women must think of ways to adapt to their environment and fast. The situation is especially dire in the swamps of Georgia. Frontiersman Colbert is facing the threat of a major flood that could submerge the fishing cabin hes been living in since the fire that destroyed his home. He manages to fix up a tree house where he will be safe from the rising waters. In Appalachia, Thorn is also working on a new shelter after a heavy rain ravages his current hut. Over the ridge, Tony and Amelia prepare for warmer weather by gathering materials to construct a new outdoor stove to keep their house from overheating. In California, Gabriel is paid a visit by a friend who brings him some much-needed meat.
  • Live Free or Die: Rough And Rugged
As their construction projects come to fruition, these survivalists reach out to friends and family for help and to offer guidance. Colbert wraps up the trapping season on a high note, catching one last beaver and sending off his pelts to the North American Fur Auction. He also gets a visit from his nephew, Starshine, who dives into the world of the swamp and helps Colbert with tasks around the river. Northwards in the Blue Ridge, Thorn develops the land around his shelter the construction of which he finishes with the help of his daughter, Briar. A few miles over, Tony and Amelia help their neighbor out with a hairy butchering job but get some help of their own as they finish the chicken coop and move the chicks. In California, Gabriel processes the last of the goat and heads out to meet his elder, Tautaucho.
  • Live Free or Die: The Bears And The Bees
Spring continues in the swamps and woodlands as wildlife plays a bigger role in the lives of these survivalists. In California, the search for meat continues as Gabriel hunts turkey. This mission is more successful than his previous hunts and Gabriel comes home with a fresh kill. In North Carolina, Tony and Amelia tend to the bees on their property, trying different methods of catching swarms and getting the bees into hives. Meanwhile Thorn tracks down food that he believes was taken from his camp by a bear. He then performs a ritual to align his spirit with the bears. In Georgia, Colbert continues to teach Christopher and put him to work. But soon its time to say goodbye as Christopher sets out on the next leg of his quest to become a woodsman.
  • Live Free or Die: Hog Wild
With summer coming, the changing landscape and new critters begin to have an effect on daily life in the backwoods and swamps. In the mountains of Appalachia, Tony and Amelia get another bloody surprise from Amelias father Marc and make a worthwhile trade with their friend, Justin. Nearby, Thorn helps out Natalie around her house. While Natalie busies herself with a goat slaughter, Thorn dives headfirst into turkey hunting season. Down in Georgia, Colbert is engaged in a hunt of his own, tracking wild hog through the swamp. In California, Gabriel decides to leave the land where he has been living to meet his mentor, Tautacho.
  • Live Free or Die: Down The Rabbit Hole
From a rabbit hutch to a new home, new projects abound in the wild. In the swamps of Georgia, Colbert is faced with a serious challenge: transporting the materials for his new home up the river. After constructing an elaborate pulley system, he is met by family members who have come to help him rebuild. Northward in North Carolina, Thorn decides to create a primitive water catchment system that he and his daughter, Briar, can use for daily chores. And nearby, Tony and Amelia barter with a friend for some new rabbits. And over in California, Gabriel continues his journey towards the ocean, managing to catch a pack rat on the way.
