Dr. Weaver became interested in science as a child growing up in West Virginia. The skies were black at night and the stars were crisp and bright. Her wonder at the cosmos led her to work with America’s space program. Now she is an astrophysicist and the Associate Director for Science for the Astrophysics Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
Dr. Weaver earned her Ph.D. in astronomy in 1993 from the University of Maryland. In 1996, she was awarded a NASA Presidential Early Career Award to pursue research in extragalactic astronomy. Two years later she came to Goddard to work on the Constellation-X mission, part of NASA’s Beyond Einstein program. In addition to serving as the Deputy Project Scientist for Constellation-X, she has been the Program Scientist for NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and has served in many different capacities within NASA to promote science to the press and public.
She enjoys communicating the excitement of science and astronomy to a wide audience. She is also a singer, artist and performer and has a variety of artistic and musical accomplishments outside her profession.
