Known by some as the deadliest man alive, 40 years ago Charles Manson was convicted of orchestrating some of the most horrific crimes of the 20th century when a group of his followers brutally killed actress Sharon Tate, her unborn baby and four of her friends. Supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife were also fatalities during a two-night killing spree in August 1969.

But what drove Manson to command such brutality from his followers? In this programme learn how a difficult childhood and rejection by his own mother gave rise to a series of offences that led to his numerous imprisonments beginning in 1952.
