According to legend, a woman called Lin Mo lived on Meizhou Island to the north of Quanzhou Bay. She could foretell the future, and she protected her brothersÕ boats, guiding them back in to shore with her lamp. One day, though, they did not come back, and full of guilt, Lin Mo drowned herself. Since then, sailors and fishermen have looked to her for protection, calling her Mazu, or Mother Ancestor. This is from Return to Zai Tun.
